Velký Slavkov – High Tatras, Burich and Churches

Veľký Slavkov is considered a starting point for visitors to the High Tatras. Slavkovský štít (2,452 m) is named after Veľký Slavkov. A historical connection to this mountain has also been handed down: a written account of a three-day ascent of Slavkovský štít in June 1664 has survived.

Routes

The proximity of Poprad–Tatry International Airport contributes to Veľký Slavkov's good accessibility. From Veľký Slavkov, the High Tatras can be reached by the Tatranská elektrická železnica, private transport and bus services. In addition, the High Tatras can be reached from Veľký Slavkov by passenger transport. Thus, both the electric regional railway and road and bus transport are among the transport routes mentioned in connection with the town.

Landscape

The Burich archaeological site contains a hillfort from the La Tène period on an unremarkable hill. A marked cycle path leads from Veľký Slavkov to Burich. The route to Burich leads up a small hill with views over the Poprad Basin. Burich is also a popular destination for walks by residents and visitors to Veľký Slavkov.

History

The history of the town is also reflected in its churches. The evangelical church in Veľký Slavkov was built in 1786–1788 as a towerless toleration church. Architecturally, it is a hall church with a semicircular ending.

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle in Veľký Slavkov dates from the 13th century. It was built as a single-nave Early Gothic structure around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The church has largely been preserved in its original medieval form. The south portal features an example of Gothic stonework.

Leisure

Specific leisure activities include Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov, with an 18-hole miniature golf course. The miniature golf is presented as entertainment for the whole family and for groups. The Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov complex also includes the traditional Slovak restaurant Salaš Slavkov.

A rest area is located about 2.5 km beyond Veľký Slavkov in the direction leading away from the cemetery. The rest area near Veľký Slavkov has a wooden shelter with seating and a fire pit.
