Nature and Landscape

Gelnica District is home to the Margecianska línia and Závadské skalky natural monuments. The district also includes the Kloptaň nature reserve and the Poľana peatland reserve.

Margecany lies at the confluence of the Hornád and Hnilec rivers on the left bank of the Ružín Reservoir. The mountains Žakarovský vrch, Rúbaň, Smolej and Krompašský vrch are located in the vicinity of Gelnica District. Cechy is a church in the vicinity of Gelnica District, while Svätá Anna is a church in the surrounding area of Gelnica District.

The castles Kysacký hrad and Spiš Castle are located in the wider regional surroundings of Gelnica District.

Mining and Culture

The Banícke múzeum in Gelnica documents mining, folk culture, urban history, geology and guild traditions in its collections. The exhibits include miners’ tools, mine lamps, old mining maps, models illustrating ore extraction, and mining workwear and festive clothing. In August 2016, the štôlňa Jozef was opened to the public and became part of the exhibition at the Banícke múzeum in Gelnica.

The Banský skanzen contains a historic stamp mill powered by water from nearby Turzovské jazero, illustrating ore processing in the 17th century. The Bujanovský Tunnel in Rolova Huta is a technical monument and was originally a railway tunnel connecting Rolova Huta with the Kozinec recreation area.

The covered wooden bridge between Kluknava and Štefanská Huta was built over the Hornád in 1832 from larch wood and is described as the only one of its kind in Slovakia. It is used for local pedestrian and vehicle traffic, although vehicle traffic is restricted; it is also considered a tourist attraction and a technical monument.

The Baroque mansion in Kluknava is a national cultural monument. The Dom služobníctva in Kluknava is also a national cultural monument and houses the Múzeum obuvi. The Chapel of Saint Joseph in Smolník is a Baroque chapel from the 18th century, situated in a meadow behind the village on the road towards Smolnícka Huta.

Trails and Activities

The officially marked cycling route 021 runs through Gelnica District from Margecany through the Hnilec Valley towards the Dedinky recreation area.

The Banský náučný chodník begins at Banícke námestie, which is easily accessible from Gelnica mesto railway station. The educational trail is suitable for all age groups.

Turzov can be reached from Gelnica via a blue-marked hiking trail. The Lower Lake of Turzov offers opportunities for fishing.

The Park Padlých in the center of Margecany is a well-maintained memorial park suitable for a short stay, quiet reflection and a peaceful walk.
