Tajovská kopa is a protected natural formation near the municipality of Tajov in the Kremnica Mountains. The 18-metre-high travertine mound lies on the slope; it includes a cascading waterfall and dripstone formations. These forms were created by descending calcareous water.
From Tajov, Tajovská kopa can be reached in about 15 minutes via the yellow-marked hiking trail towards Suchý vrch. Thus, the natural feature comprises not only its geological form but also a clearly designated route connection from the village.
Culture
The Roman Catholic Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa Church in Tajov is considered the oldest cultural and historical monument in the municipality. It was reconstructed in the Renaissance-Baroque style in the 18th century. Its tower houses the large bell of Saint Ignatius from 1771, as well as two newer bells from 1922.
The Pamätný dom Jozefa Gregora Tajovského in Tajov houses an exhibition in the writer’s wooden birthplace. It is dedicated to the history of Tajov and significant figures from the municipality. The focus is on the literary contexts of Jozef Gregor Tajovský and his wife Hana Gregorová, who was a writer and translator.
The entrance area of the Pamätný dom Jozefa Gregora Tajovského also contains a small exhibition about Jozef Murgaš. The inventor, painter and priest from Tajov is presented there through these three interconnected facets.
History
The old Görgeyho Tunnel lies high in the Kremnica Mountains on a historic mining route between Kremnica and Banská Bystrica. From the Banská Bystrica side, the tunnel is accessible via a yellow-marked trail from the car park near the former Sokol or State Lodge above Tajov.
Today, the Görgeyho Tunnel serves as a popular passage for hikers and cyclists, as well as for cross-country skiers in winter. Its present-day use thus combines the historic route with different modes of transport in different seasons.
