Poniky combines sacred history, living folk culture and a landscape with distinctive karst formations. There is also an educational trail, a green cycling route and recurring events. This means that visitors encounter a variety of themes in the town, ranging from churches and exhibitions to nature and cycling.
Culture
Ponický dom houses a permanent exhibition on the folklore and cultural history of Poniky. The same building also contains an authentic exhibition about the writer and poet Štefan Žáry. Local heritage is also reflected in numerous customs that have survived to this day. The Poničan folklore ensemble and a children's folklore ensemble present these local traditions.
The musical heritage of the area includes the fujara and six-hole shepherd's flutes. Both traditional instruments have survived in the Poniky area to this day; the fujara is decorated with engravings and burned-in ornaments. The production of household textiles also has a long tradition in Poniky.
Among the area's notable cultural monuments is the Vodný mlyn Jána Mračka water mill, which is classified as a national cultural monument. An Evangelical church in Poniky dates from 1784 and has a Tolerance Tower dating from 1868.
History
A church in Poniky was built in the first quarter of the 14th century. Its frescoes feature Franciscan motifs from two main periods: around 1380 and in 1415. The church can be visited free of charge by prior telephone appointment.
The Poniky parish also includes the Panny Márie Fatimskej filial church from 1945, the Najsvätejšej Trojice chapel from 1846 and the sv. Jána Nepomuckého chapel from 1960. Thus, sacred buildings from several centuries stand side by side in one place, with each building mentioned having its own specific date.
Nature
The Ponický karst lies west of Poniky and covers an area of approximately 4 km². Karst features such as sinkholes and blind valleys can be found in and around Poniky. In the NPR Ponická dúbrava national nature reserve, sessile oak grows particularly well in challenging terrain. Poniky is also considered an important mushroom-picking area.
Getting around
The Hradisko educational trail is a self-guided, year-round circular route for pedestrians that can be walked in either direction. It is 2.3 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 1.5 hours. Its length and approximate duration give you a clear basis for fitting the trail into your day's schedule.
For cycling trips, the green cycling route 5558 runs from Ponická Huta via Poniky to Šalková. The route description specifies both the starting point and Poniky, as well as the route's destination, so it can be considered a separate trail option independent of the educational trail.
Events
The cycling hill climb “Ponickými kiarmi” was held in Poniky for the tenth time on 13 September 2025; the 11th edition is confirmed for 2026. The children's folklore festival “Zdola ponickýho mlyna” also takes place in Poniky. The 28th edition of this festival is confirmed for 13 June 2026.
