Medzibrod combines a distinctive natural landscape with unique cultural sites and a regionally rooted event culture. The part of the cadastral area located north of the Hron belongs to the NAPANT protected area. North of Medzibrod there is also the 42.23-hectare Máčková nature reserve. It is home to numerous pasque flowers as well as preserved forest-steppe and near-natural beech forest communities.
Nature
The Hron runs along the eastern-southern side of Medzibrod; the Vyvieranica and Močiar streams flow into it. Forests cover almost 60 percent of the cadastral area. The lady's-slipper orchid is considered a characteristic plant of Medzibrod's flora and blooms in natural beech forests on limestone soil. This means that different landscape elements exist side by side in and around the village: the riverbank, wooded areas, protected habitats and the natural areas to the north.
Cycling Route
A cycling route runs through Medzibrod and connects the village with Hiadeľ, Brusno and Pohronský Bukovec. The route places the mentioned villages within a shared route network, without any specific length or duration being stated for the route.
Culture
One of the notable buildings is the parish church in Medzibrod. It was built of stone in 1790, consecrated on 16 May 1791 and built in the Rococo style. The church contains an organ loft, a mechanical tower clock and three bells; the organ was extensively renovated in 2008. The church also has eight stained-glass windows, which the artist Ladislav Cserba created for it in 2008 and 2009.
Another religious site is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was built in 1808 as a votive chapel commemorating the rescue of the inhabitants living along the Hron from ice dammed up in the river. The name Medzibrod is also associated with the area's historical location between fords. The local architectural and technical heritage also includes a water tower for filling steam locomotives.
The Medzibrodské kočovné divadlo focuses primarily on Slovak and foreign classical plays with a comedic character. In this way, the theatre complements the sacred, historical and technical monuments with a vibrant theatre culture.
Local Character
The Haruľová šou, held annually in September, is a competition between teams for the Haruľa of the Year and is accompanied by an extensive cultural programme and side events. The Haruľová šou also includes a competition for the longest potato peel.
