The places and activities offer different points to consider when planning your trip.
Winter Activities and Mountains
Saudehornet is the highest peak in the mountain massif north of Ørsta and offers views in every direction. Kyrkjetinden is a peak close to Ørsta; there are beautiful views on the way to the summit and from the top. Saudehornet is known for its setting in the mountain massif and its panoramic views, while Kyrkjetinden stands out for its proximity to town and the views along the route and from the summit.
Another named route runs from Ørsta to Volda via Melshornet. It starts at Rystefeltet in Ørsta and goes via Pølsa and Melshornet to Volda. Buses also run between Volda and Ørsta. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Cultural History and Architecture
Brudavolltunet is an authentic farmstead whose buildings and landscape are of considerable cultural and historical value. The oldest part of the buildings dates from the 17th century. Aasentunet is located in Hovdebygda and is one of the few language museums in the Nordic region. Activities there include exhibitions, guided tours, research, cultural events and festivals.
Hjørundfjord Church also brings together various historical and artistic features: the timber-framed long church dates from 1880. Its altarpiece is the central element of an altar shrine from the early 16th century; the church also has several stained-glass windows created by Jørgen Skaare. If you include cultural sites in your trip, you’ll find a specific example of historic church architecture here, alongside the farmstead’s history and the language museum.
Fjord Destinations and Getting There
There is no road connection to Christian Gaard Bygdetun in Trandal. You can get there by ferry from Ytre Standal or Sæbø, by shuttle boat, or in summer by the public boat between Ålesund, Trandal, Sæbø, Urke and Øye. Check ferry and boat connections before travelling. The swing at the Bygdetun lets you swing out over the fjord. Food and drinks made from local produce are also served there; as the offerings may change, it is advisable to confirm them before your visit.
For your trip planning, a stay that includes a destination in Trandal is quite different from one focused on the mountains or cultural sites: the ferry or boat connection is a separate part of the itinerary. At the same time, the Bygdetun offers a combination of fjord views, a swing, and local food and drinks.
Choosing Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests
If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Ørsta, choose among the options based on your planned stay: skiing at ski lifts and ski touring, peaks and routes, cultural sites, or a trip to Trandal. For Trandal, take the separate ferry or boat journey into account.
