Fjord scenery and mountains

The landscape of Sykkylven includes narrow fjords, flat and fertile valleys, blue glaciers, mighty mountains and dramatic mountain formations. It ranges from fjords and valleys to distinctive mountain features. Plan your trip around the themes you would like to include in your stay.

Ski lessons and hiking destinations

The course offering at Fjellsætra covers three disciplines and two stated experience levels: beginners and advanced skiers can choose lessons in alpine skiing, Telemark and snowboarding. Since availability may vary by season, your travel dates are important when planning.

The municipality of Sykkylven’s seasonal municipal hiking guide for 2026 lists established destinations with the difficulty colors green, blue and red. Green routes are suitable for most people, blue routes require some hiking experience, and red routes are intended for experienced hikers with good stamina. Check the classifications again for later seasons. The route around Sæssvatna in Jarnes/Ikornnes follows a gravel road and trail. The hiking options therefore highlight different kinds of guidance: in one case, a difficulty rating; in the other, a description of the terrain.

Museums and history

The Møbelmuseet in Sykkylven tells the story of how Sunnmøre became a center of the furniture industry, with customers around the world. Its permanent exhibition includes furniture from the more than 100-year history of Norway’s furniture industry. The exhibition area is accessible; check the accessibility information before your trip.

At the Naturmuseet, the MOSAIKK exhibition showcases the diversity of nature, wildlife and birdlife in Sunnmøre’s coastal fjords. The museum presents plants, animals and birds as part of a mosaic of the surrounding natural landscape. The two museums therefore focus on different things: the Møbelmuseet explores industrial history, while the Naturmuseet focuses on nature and wildlife.

Archaeological finds also offer insight into the area’s long history. At Aurefløten, they provide evidence of settlement dating back at least 4,000 years. Aursneset is home to six large burial mounds. Their dating is uncertain: they may date either to the Early Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago, or to the Early Iron Age (approx. 300–550 AD).

Activities on the water and by bike

Sykkylven’s harbor offers opportunities for swimming, paddling and boating. The cycling options also vary: they range from rides off paved roads, from the mountain to the fjord, to routes along mountain lakes or the fjord, as well as a pump track. This gives you a choice of different settings and types of cycling.

The Fjølg sauna in Sykkylven’s small boat harbor combines a sauna session with a refreshing swim in the sea. Together with the opportunities for swimming, paddling and boating, it adds a wellness option to the activities on the water.

Plan your ferry connection

The ferry from Hundeidvik goes to Standal and continues to Trandal, which is not connected to the road network. If your trip includes this connection, check ferry operations and the timetable in advance. This will help you plan your journey based on the actual service.
