Ørsta offers specific starting points for a stay centred on hiking and culture: viewpoints above the town centre, summit destinations and the Kulturminneløypa, a cultural heritage trail with stops related to the town’s history. If you are looking for accommodation in Ørsta, you can choose based on which of these experiences matter to you during your stay. The trailheads and destinations described are different, so check which hike or cultural stop you would like to visit when planning your day.

Hiking around Ørsta

The climb to Saudehornet starts in Ørsta sentrum. The route follows Vikegeila to the water treatment plant, where there is a car park. This gives you a specific starting point for the hike.

Skålavegen is a hiking trail used in both summer and winter. There are lights from the waterworks to the third water house. Bus access is also described: to reach Skålavegen, get off at the first stop on Kyrkjegata after the roundabout in the centre. This information about the route and bus stop can help you plan your journey in advance; it does not indicate current conditions on the trail.

Another option is the hike to Gapahuken Skåla, a viewpoint above Ørsta sentrum. There is a shelter with benches and similar amenities. You can start the hike in Ørsta sentrum, for example at the Amfi shopping centre, where you can also park. The viewpoint, shelter and starting point at Amfi are separate landmarks to help with your planning.

Kyrkjetinden is a summit close to town. There are beautiful views both on the way up and from the summit; the ascent via Skytjedalen is considered particularly appealing. For a different hiking option, consider Rambjørhornet: this short summit hike offers views of Ørsta sentrum, Mosegga, Sandhornet, Brekkeheida, Kjerringa, Saudehornet and Vassdalstinden. It is suitable as a training hike, an afternoon or evening walk, or a Sunday hike with children.

Cultural sites and local history

The Kulturminneløypa runs from the Gravhaugane på Velle via Kjempehaugen in Vik and the Kunsthuset to Svendsengarden. There is also a café at Svendsengarden. The named stops make the route an option for including cultural sites in your travel plans. The Gravhaugane på Velle are Iron Age burial mounds or grave monuments in what is now the centre of Ørsta; they are located outside Ørsta ungdomsskule.

Kjempehaugen in Vik is also an Iron Age burial mound. According to tradition, Tik i Vik was buried there. This is distinct from the precise location of Kjempehaugen in Ørsta sentrum: it is right by the E39 and next to Tik Café & Restaurant. Its location by the E39 and next to Tik Café & Restaurant helps you identify Kjempehaugen in Ørsta sentrum.

The Kunsthuset is now used for art exhibitions. As a cultural heritage site of local importance, it is a symbol of Ørsta’s industrial history. Svendsengarden is considered a cultural heritage site of regional importance and was chosen as Ørsta Municipality’s millennium site in 2000. If you are interested in art, industrial history or local heritage sites, you can take these different aspects into account when planning.

Plan your stay

The options described range from short summit hikes and a trail used in different seasons to historical sites. When planning, choose according to your group’s specific interests: views and summits, a hike with children, or cultural sites and exhibitions. To compare another place, you can also look at Sæbø.
