Sæbø offers clearly distinguishable points of reference for planning your trip: ferry and bus connections, hiking destinations with views of the fjord and mountains, and Hjørundfjord Church. The trails described have distinctly different characteristics; the two routes also connect different places.

Getting here by ferry and bus

Ferry route 1136 connects Standal, Trandal, Sæbø, Skår, Valderøya and Store Kalvøy. Its timetable is valid from 17 August 2026 until further notice. Bus route 370 connects Sæbø, Åmdal and Ørsta; its timetable is also valid from 6 January 2026 until further notice. Check the FRAM journey planner for changes and disruptions before travelling. The difference between the routes is important when planning: one is a ferry connection with several stops, while the other is a bus route via Åmdal to Ørsta.

Hiking trails and views

The Gunnarråsa hike offers views of the Hjørundfjord and the surrounding mountains. From the Hjartebenken viewpoint, the view stretches across the fjord to the mountains: Saksa lies to the east, Slogen to the southeast and Jakta straight ahead; Dalegubben is behind you. Hjartebenken is easy to access and suitable for children and adults. The hike can also be done after dark, as lanterns are placed almost all the way to the summit. Check the condition of the lighting locally before your visit.

A different kind of trail awaits you at Tua on Sæbøneset: the good, marked path climbs steeply up the hillside. From the summit, you can see the ferry on the fjord, the surrounding peaks and Sæbø below. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing between Hjartebenken and Tua: the first destination is described as easy to access and suitable for children and adults, while the second has a steep route. Each offers its own distinctive views.

Church and regional context

Hjørundfjord Church in Sæbø is a timber-built long church constructed in 1880. Its architectural style and year of construction give the place a clear architectural and historical dimension alongside its viewpoints. If you do not want to plan your trip solely around hiking trails, the church is another local feature to consider as you explore the area.

In the wider destination of Ørsta, you will find more cultural attractions: Brudavolltunet is an authentic farm whose buildings and landscape are of significant cultural and historical value. The oldest part of the buildings dates from the 17th century. Aasentunet is one of the few language museums in the Nordic region and offers exhibitions, guided tours, research, cultural events and festivals.

Winter activities are also part of Ørsta as a wider destination: there are opportunities for skiing at ski lifts, ski touring and other winter activities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these regional offerings from the specific trails and attractions in Sæbø.
