Møre og Romsdal brings together coastal roads, fjord landscapes, mountain paths and cultural heritage sites. When looking for accommodation, it helps to plan your trip around the experiences you want to focus on: a drive along the coast, paths by the sea and in the mountains, a World Heritage site or historical exhibitions. The following places and routes offer specific points of reference without prescribing a particular itinerary.

Coastal road and mountain route

The Atlantic Ocean Road is a National Scenic Route and offers a connected experience of coast, culture and history between Bud and Kristiansund. It runs across eight bridges from Kårvåg on Averøya to Vevang on the mainland. This makes it possible to distinguish between the specific sequence of bridges and the broader coastal route as two different ways of finding your bearings. When planning your drive, you can consider which places and sections you want to focus on.

Trollstigen connects Åndalsnes with Valldal and winds through the steep mountainsides of Romsdalen in eleven hairpin bends. Here, the mountain route shapes the travel experience, while the Atlantic Ocean Road brings together coast, culture and history. Check the current road status before driving Trollstigen.

Paths by the sea and in the mountains

On Eldhusøya, the Svevestien is a 550-metre-long, accessible path right by the sea. It is part of the Atlantic Ocean Road, one of Norway’s National Scenic Routes. The coastal path in Bud offers a different scale: the 7-kilometre circular route passes through varied terrain at the foot of Gulberget and continues towards the open sea. Along the way, you can look out over the shipping route and Hustadvika. The length and type of path differ considerably: choose between a short path by the water and a longer circular walk.

From the car park in Nerdalen, an approximately one-hour, 3.5-kilometre walk leads into the heart of Innerdalen; trail conditions may vary. The valley offers high mountains, waterfalls, hiking trails and rustic mountain cabins. The combination of specific route guidance and a landscape of mountains and waterfalls provides a distinct contrast to the coastal paths.

Fjord landscapes and cultural heritage

Geirangerfjord was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 as part of the West Norwegian Fjord Landscape. Large parts of the fjord and its surroundings are designated as a landscape protection area. World Heritage status and protected-area designation describe different features of the landscape.

Leikvin Rural Museum is part of Leikvin Heritage Park and presents the history of the British salmon lords in Nordmøre. Exhibitions may change. At Løykja, a signposted path with information in several languages leads to an Iron Age burial site. These historical places offer different themes for planning your trip: the salmon lords of Nordmøre and an archaeological site with multilingual trail signs.

Ona: lighthouse and ferry connections

You can enter Ona Lighthouse; from the top, you can enjoy views of the sea and the mainland. As access conditions may change, it is a good idea to check them before your visit.

Ona can be reached by ferry from Molde, Ålesund or Midsund. The various connections run via Hollingen and Aukra, Småge, Finnøya or Dryna, as well as other islands and ferry ports. Routes and timetables may change, so check the current connections before travelling. If you are staying on Ona, the ferry timetable and access to the lighthouse are two separate planning considerations.
