Predazzo: Geology, Culture and Trails

Geological Garden and Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium

Predazzo is known as the “Geological Garden of the Alps” because of its high concentration of geological varieties. The Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991, 2003 and 2013. Along the Doss Capèl geological trail between Passo Feudo and Alpe di Pampeago, at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,200 metres, marine fossils as well as lava flows, ash and lapilli from the ancient volcano of Predazzo can be seen. Lapilli are small volcanic ejecta and are therefore among the volcanic traces that characterise this trail.

Town Centre and Museums

The Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti is located in Predazzo’s central square. The museum was inaugurated in Predazzo in 1899 and reopened in 2015 after extensive renovation, featuring a modern, interactive exhibition. Predazzo’s historic centre is characterised by the neo-Gothic Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, built in 1870. The Church of S. Nicolò is the oldest church in Predazzo and dates back to the 16th century.

Paneveggio, Foresta dei Violini and Nature Observation

In the wider area around Predazzo, the Centro visitatori di Paneveggio is located along the road from Predazzo to Passo Rolle, in the middle of the spruce forest known as the Foresta dei Violini. The Sentiero Marciò, a nature trail with guided and illustrated observation points, begins near the Paneveggio visitor centre. At the Paneveggio visitor centre, the “Suona Foresta” installation explains the surrounding forest, which is known for its resonance wood. Near the Paneveggio visitor centre, a large enclosure allows visitors to observe a group of large ungulates at close range.

Walks, Cycle Path and Biolago

The Passeggiata lungo Avisio is a walk lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes, suitable for all age groups and for pushchairs. A walking trail around Predazzo leads to the Sottosassa Gorge. At the Sottosassa Gorge, visitors can view the waterfalls of the Travignolo beneath porphyry walls equipped for sport climbing. On the return route, the Easy Bike Ring - rosso follows the historic Dolomites cycle route through the green meadows of the Predazzo countryside, offers views of the Latemar Dolomites and leads to the new Biolago.

Water, Festivals and Local Produce

The Biolago is a natural swimming pool that opened to the public in August 2020. The water in the Biolago comes from a drinking-water well and a mountain stream. The water in the Biolago is purified exclusively by plants and microorganisms in special pools. The annual Festa di San Giacomo in Predazzo includes a market and an event day open to residents, families and tourists. Puzzone di Moena is the most important product of the Caseificio Sociale di Predazzo e Moena dairy and is still made according to the original recipe.
