Gereut: Mòcheno Traces, Churches and Trails

Language and Place Names in Frassilongo

The Mòcheno language is spoken by some families in Frassilongo. In Frassilongo/Garait, the names of inhabited places, summer pastures, forests and mountain areas are predominantly Mòcheno. Those interested in the linguistic character of a place can therefore encounter the language in different areas of the local environment: in settlements as well as in names for pastureland, forest areas and mountain areas.

Churches and Historical Traces

On the façade of the old church in Frassilongo is a fresco of Saint Christopher dating from 1521, attributed to Nicolò Paracchia. A fresco is a wall painting executed on plaster; here, both the subject and the year of creation have been handed down. Roveda is also home to the Church of San Romedio. It is dedicated to Saint Romedius and was built around 1797. The date is intentionally approximate and places the construction in the late 18th century.

A Mòcheno inscription appears on the portal of the Church of San Romedio in Roveda. It commemorates the itinerant traders of Roveda. Thus, this church portal conveys not only a religious reference but also a reminder of the traders commemorated by the inscription. The two aspects remain clearly separate: the church is dedicated to Saint Romedius, while the inscription commemorates the itinerant traders of Roveda.

Kamaovrunt and the Madonna della Pace

The higher-lying hamlet of Kamaovrunt is considered picturesque because of its architecture and location. The name Kamaovrunt is also used in the form Kamauz. The Madonna della Pace chapel stands in Kamaovrunt. The chapel was designed by Don Guido Avi and blessed on 15 July 1984.

Trails for Hiking and Snowshoeing

The Bernstol Trail runs partly through Frassilongo and partly through the neighbouring municipality of Fierozzo. Within the cadastral area of Frassilongo, the Bernstol Trail is a route for hiking on foot and snowshoeing. Hiking on foot and snowshoeing refer to two different ways of using the trail: the former takes place without special snowshoe equipment, while the latter is intended for winter conditions. No specific length, difficulty level or connection to another trail is given for the Bernstol Trail.

Bersntol Ring and Mòcheno Cuisine

For the 2025 edition of the Bersntol Ring, the start and finish were located next to the chapel in Kamaovrunt (Kamauz). For the same edition, eight food stops featuring traditional Mòcheno and Trentino dishes were planned along the route. The wording expressly refers to the 2025 edition and to what was planned along the route. It describes neither permanently available food services nor a general offering on every date.

The Old De Mil Mill

The old De Mil mill is located in Roveda/Oachlait, a district of Frassilongo, and is powered by the waters of the Rio Rigolor. The water-powered system refers to the mill’s technical function: the water of the Rio Rigolor provides the driving force.

Further destinations for planning your trip include Ischia Di Pergine, Cavedago, San Martino Di Castrozza, Vigo Di Fassa, Lagolo, Spiazzo, Monte Mezza and Vigolo Vattaro.
