Culture and Historic Sites in Cogolo

The Chiesa Nuova Maria Madre della Chiesa was built between 1970 and 1974 and consecrated in 1974. Its supporting structures are made of reinforced concrete, while the exposed blocks are made of granite. Inside are sculptures by local artists Renato Perini and Luciano Carnessali.

On the outskirts of Cogolo stands the old Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo. It was built in 1332 and restored after a fire in 1804. Its north wall features a large fresco cycle by Giovanni Angelo Valorsa from Grosio, dating from 1643. The Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo preserves three fresco panels on the apse wall, including a monumental depiction of San Cristoforo. In 2022, it was declared a FAI Luogo del Cuore. The chapel stands alone in the meadows along the road from Cogolo to Valle della Mare.

The Palazzo Migazzi houses a museum open to the public, with a permanent exhibition about Cardinal Migazzi and temporary exhibitions on the second floor. The palazzo is open from 1 July to 27 September 2026 on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30–12:30 and 16:00–19:00, and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 16:00–19:00; it is closed on Mondays and Sundays. The Centrale Idroelettrica di Cogolo is a remarkable example of 1920s industrial architecture. Its large rooms are decorated using the historic graffito technique. As part of guided tours, the centrale can be visited on Tuesdays until 9 September 2026 from 14:30–17:00. Groups of at least 20 people can reserve by calling 0461 032486.

Trails, Cycling Route and Cross-Country Skiing

The cableway system built in 1917 to Punta Linke led from Cogolo to the western summit of Vioz, the 3,629-metre-high Punta Linke. In the area around Cogolo, Punta Linke offers a summer visitor route through historic installations preserved in the ice.

The Sentiero Botanico runs along the old road that connected Cogolo with Peio. The walk from Cogolo di Peio to the Chiesetta di Santa Lucia is an easy stroll through the forest and offers an impressive viewpoint over the valley. The Camminata tra i masi begins at the Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo in Pegaia near Cogolo di Peio and leads through forests, pastures and mown meadows, passing characteristic mountain farmsteads.

The Pista Ciclabile Val di Sole begins in Cogolo and runs along the banks of the Noce. It follows the Torrente Noce for 35 kilometres. The Bike Train operates on the Mostizzolo–Mezzana route and is equipped to transport bicycles.

For winter sports, the Centro Fondo di Cogolo offers five cross-country skiing circuits with a total of 15 kilometres of groomed trails. The Centro Visitatori Pejo is a small museum and information centre about the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio. Installations, multimedia presentations, time-lapse footage, sounds and scents convey the national park there.

Traditions in Cogolo

The traditional Fera de Cogol includes a livestock exhibition in the centre of Cogolo. A procession of cows through the streets of Cogolo symbolises their return from the alpine pastures. The Palio delle Frazioni is a traditional competition between the local settlements, with challenges such as mowing hay and felling trees.
