History in the Town Centre

In the historic centre of Mezzolombardo, the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist was built between 1846 and 1849. The bell tower preserved from the former church dates from 1752 to 1765 and now stands free-standing in the square.

The ancient Piaz quarter, with its alleyways, palaces and aristocratic villas, tells of Mezzolombardo’s history as a trading community. The Church of San Pietro was built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in 1534. Palazzo del Podestà is an aristocratic residence dating from the 18th century with richly ornamented interiors.

Castles, Gardens and Museums

Castello della Torre is a Renaissance residence surrounded by terraced gardens. The oldest part of Castello della Torre is a massive 13th-century tower that was incorporated into the central residential building.

The Castello della Torre complex includes the 16th-century Chapel of S. Apollonia in the panoramic gardens. Castello della Torre cannot be visited, but it can be viewed from Mezzolombardo’s historic alleyways.

The Cose di Casa Museum in Villa de Varda is divided into three sections and displays around 1,600 objects relating to agriculture, winemaking and distillation in Trentino. Villa de Varda also offers the bookable “inQuota Whisky Discover” experience. It includes a guided tour of the distillery, a visit to the Cose di Casa Museum and a tasting of four inQuota whiskies.

Villa de Varda’s “inQuota 360° Whisky Edition” includes a visit to the mash fermentation room, a whisky workshop and a tasting of four inQuota whiskies with local products.

Winegrowing and Regional Specialities

Winegrowing has been practised in Mezzolombardo for thousands of years. Teroldego Rotaliano is considered a full-bodied and aromatic red wine from Mezzolombardo. Cantina Rotaliana calls itself the “Casa del Teroldego”.

The 300 members of Cantina Rotaliana are committed to preserving the Teroldego grape variety. Guided tours of the wine cellar and vineyard can be booked at Cantina Rotaliana.

The bookable “Diario di viaggio” experience at Agricola Foradori begins in the estate’s vineyards and vegetable gardens. The Agricola Foradori experience includes visits to two cellar rooms: one with wooden barrels and vats, and another with terracotta tinajas. It concludes with a tasting of biodynamically produced wines accompanied by raw-milk cheese.

Bridge, Via Ferrata and Landscape

Monte Fausior above Mezzolombardo is home to deep gorges carved out by the Rio Fai. The 130-metre-long Ponte sospeso Mezzolombardo suspension bridge connects Toresela with Colle San Pietro.

The Ponte sospeso Mezzolombardo suspension bridge can be reached on foot from Mezzolombardo’s historic centre in ten minutes. The Ferrata Val del Ri begins in the upper part of Mezzolombardo at the tower summit known as Toresela and is suitable for experienced hikers.

The SAT trail O603B is associated with the names Pra Grant and Croce di Mezzolombardo, as well as the value 690.
