Mountain landscapes and winter activities

Cavalese is situated on a sunny terrace opposite the Lagorai mountain range. The Stadio del ghiaccio Cavalese is a diamond-shaped facility in the centre; visitors can ice-skate there in winter and summer. The Lugicap ICE adaptive platform can be used with standard wheelchairs and enables ice-skating with an accompanying person. Acqua & SPA Cavalese has a 25-metre pool with FIM approval and five lanes, five hydromassage and whirlpool pools, an 81-metre water slide and a baby pool.

Art and sacred history

The Chiesa di San Vigilio was built between 1685 and 1688 and consecrated in 1698. The wooden high altar was donated by Leopold I of Austria. The Chiesa di San Vigilio, its choir and the monastery house an extensive collection of paintings by artists of the Fiemme School, mostly by Giovanni Giuseppe Alberti.

Palazzo and contemporary art

The Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme was probably built towards the end of the 13th century. It houses an art gallery, a museum and an archive containing manuscripts, statutes and historical writings. From 26 June to 27 September 2026, the Palazzo is open daily except Tuesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 18:30; last admission is at 18:00. The Museo Arte Contemporanea Cavalese was established in 2001 in the historic Palazzo Rizzoli in the historic centre of Cavalese. The Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Cavalese presents temporary group and solo exhibitions throughout the year.

Other sites relating to the town's history

The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta was built in the 12th century and completely rebuilt in the 15th century. It has a bell tower built by Giuseppe Alberti in the 17th century, as well as a wood-panelled entrance hall with frescoes by Antonio Longo. The Chiesa San Sebastiano in Cavalese was built in 1464. During its restoration in 2002, the 19th-century Stations of the Cross by the Cavalese-born painter Carlo Vanzo were made visible again. The Gothic bell tower of the Chiesa San Sebastiano received its battlements in 1829 and is now considered a landmark of Cavalese.

The Banco de la Reson stands in the Parco della Pieve di Cavalese, a stone structure with two concentric rows of seats around a round table; from the 16th century until 1780, the assemblies of the Comun General were held there every 15 August. The municipal Venetian sawmill of Cavalese has been restored with its former water-powered mechanism and is operated in summer for demonstration purposes.

Paths, waterfall and local traditions

The route from Masi di Cavalese leads to the Cascata di Cavalese, a waterfall approximately 20 metres high and surrounded by lush nature. “Montagna Senza Limiti – Giro del Parco della Pieve” is a circular route in the Parco della Pieve di Cavalese.

Birra di Fiemme is a craft beer made from pure water and local ingredients; the Birra di Fiemme agricultural brewery grows hops and barley. La Desmontegada de le Caore is a traditional event in Cavalese featuring a procession of goats and breeders through the town's streets to celebrate their return from the alpine pastures.

Travelling to Cavalese by car

Those travelling by car can leave the A22 at the Egna/Ora exit and follow the Statale delle Dolomiti SS 48 to Cavalese.
