Calliano: Castel Pietra, Rio Cavallo and Vineyards

Calliano can be explored through several distinctive local features: medieval origins, historic buildings, the Rio Cavallo, a landscape of vineyards and mountains, the Sentiero dell’Arte, and summer and culinary events.

History and Buildings

Calliano has medieval origins. In Calliano’s historic centre, there are stately palaces with fresco-adorned façades. The term historic centre generally refers to the older, central area of a place; stately refers to representative architecture, while frescoes are paintings on walls or ceilings. Castel Pietra is located in Calliano at the foot of Castel Beseno. Calliano is home to the Church of San Lorenzo and the Chiesetta dei Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano.

The Church of San Lorenzo dates back to 1724, is neoclassical, and commemorates the Trentino-Tyrolean victory of 1487. Neoclassical architecture generally draws on forms of classical architecture. The Battle of Calliano is commemorated every year with a historical re-enactment. The year 1724 refers to the year San Lorenzo was built, while 1487 refers to the church’s historical context.

Rio Cavallo and Landscape

Calliano lies on the Rio Cavallo, a mountain stream that flows down from Folgaria and empties into the Adige. A mountain stream is a naturally flowing body of water with its own course. At Zambel in Calliano, there is the Rio’s distinctive waterfall, where the water flows fresh and clear. A waterfall is the point at which water drops over a step or precipice; at Zambel, this landscape feature bears the name of the Rio.

Calliano lies in a landscape of vineyards and mountains. Vineyards are areas planted with vines, while mountains shape a landscape through their elevations. The two terms refer to different landscape elements: cultivated vine-growing areas and the mountainous surroundings.

Sentiero dell’Arte and Events

The Sentiero dell’Arte is an easy trekking route on unpaved paths, which is also suitable for families but not for pushchairs. A trekking route is travelled on foot; the rating easy refers to the level of difficulty. When planning with children, therefore, the surface is an additional factor to consider alongside the difficulty of the Sentiero dell’Arte. The restriction for pushchairs is a separate practical detail of this route.

In summer, the Sagra dell’Addolorata takes place in Calliano. In Italian usage, a sagra is a local festival. Calliano also takes part in the Magnalonga, a culinary walk regarded as the first food and wine walk in Trentino and organised together with Volano and Besenello. Food and wine combines eating and drinking; a culinary walk refers to an event format in which the route and the refreshments are connected.
