Museum and Crafts in Ceres

The Museo delle Genti delle Valli di Lanzo presents the local culture of Ceres through past traditions and traditional crafts, with household objects and work tools. The museum includes a collection of nails. The nails were formerly forged in the valley and exported throughout Italy. The nail collection is a tangible example of the crafts covered by the museum.

Themes of the Lanzo Valleys

The museum is divided into thematic areas focusing on the Lanzo Valleys and the people who live there. Other themes concern agriculture and livestock farming, craftwork, flora, fauna and mineralogy. The themes range from the lives of the people and their work to the natural features of the valleys.

Chiesa parrocchiale dell'Assunta

The Chiesa parrocchiale dell'Assunta was built between 1733 and 1754. Its 18th-century wooden pulpit was made by the woodcarver Giuseppe Antonio Riva. The pulpit and bell tower date from clearly different centuries.

Bell Tower and Pulpit

The bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale dell'Assunta dates from the 12th century. It was designed in the Lombard-Gothic style with bifora windows and a conical spire. The bell tower is the oldest of these structures.

Cappella di Voragno and Frescoes

The Cappella di Voragno contains numerous frescoes. They probably date from the 17th century and bear witness to the passage of the Holy Shroud through the Lanzo Valleys.

Stazione di Ceres and Ponte della Vana

The Stazione di Ceres was built in 1915 based on a design by the engineer Scotti. The three-storey railway building is made of masonry and reinforced concrete and has a wooden gabled roof. The Ponte della Vana is a humpback bridge built in 1740. The Stazione di Ceres and Ponte della Vana date from different construction periods. The bridge is a different type of structure from the railway building.

Monte Santa Cristina Circular Trail

The Monte Santa Cristina circular trail begins in Ceres and leads to the Santuario di Santa Cristina. The trail then descends to Cantoira. The return to Ceres is via the road. For day planning, this road section should be considered a separate part of the loop.

Beech and Chestnut Forests

The trail from Ceres to the Santuario di Santa Cristina passes through beech and chestnut forests. Along this section, it offers views of the main peaks of Val Grande and Val d'Ala.

Museum Hours in Ceres

The Museo delle Genti delle Valli di Lanzo is scheduled to be open for visits from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month from May to October. If you plan a museum visit in Ceres, the scheduled period is therefore on Sunday afternoon between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The historic buildings thus range from medieval architecture to the 20th-century railway building.
