Archaeological finds and evidence initially confirm Etruscan and later Roman settlements in Ballabio. Its strategic location at the entrance to the Balisio Gorge led to fortifications being built there as early as around the year 1000. Churches and Literary Connections
Santa Maria Assunta is located in Ballabio Superiore. The church has a Baroque interior with a single-nave layout, side chapels, and frescoed vaults. San Lorenzo was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century and subsequently restored. Both churches add distinct historical accents within the districts.
