Fiumelatte: Stream, Cave and Trails around Varenna

Fiumelatte Stream and Grotta di Fiumelatte

The Fiumelatte stream runs from its source to the lake over a distance of approximately 250 m. Its foaming waters give the stream a milky-white colour. Above the municipality of Varenna’s locality of the same name, the Grotta di Fiumelatte opens at 325 m above sea level. It is one of the most striking karst phenomena in the entire Grigna massif.

The Grotta di Fiumelatte is not a spring that flows throughout the year, but has a seasonal regime with alternating periods of low and high water. An experiment confirmed the direct relationship between the cave and the karst system in the mountain’s summit area.

Trails from Varenna to Fiumelatte

The village of Fiumelatte, crossed by the river of the same name, can be reached from Varenna’s town centre via an approximately 20-minute walk along a section of the Greenway dei Patriarchi. Access to the Sorgente di Fiumelatte leads from Piazza San Giorgio in Varenna via Via Roma and past the cemetery to a staircase. The path then runs halfway up the slope, parallel to the lake, to Fiumelatte.

The lower variant of the Sentiero del Viandante between Lierna, Varenna and Perledo also passes the sources of the Fiumelatte. The path from the town centre leads to the village, access via Piazza San Giorgio and Via Roma leads to the source, and the Sentiero del Viandante runs between Lierna, Varenna and Perledo.

Lakeside paths and nearby excursion destinations

In Varenna, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati is a short lakeside footpath leading from the ferry landing to the town centre. The terraced grounds of the nearby Villa Monastero include a path approximately two kilometres long that leads to the nearby locality of Fiumelatte. The two paths have different emphases: the Passeggiata connects the ferry landing with Varenna’s town centre, while the path at Villa Monastero extends to Fiumelatte.

At the nearby Castello di Vezio, you can visit the gardens, underground areas and curtain wall, view works of art and climb the tower with a permanent exhibition about the Lariosaurus. This makes it possible to combine a stay by the water with a visit to a historic site and an exhibition, without equating the destinations geographically or functionally.

Transport connections and local culture

Car ferries connect Varenna with the municipalities of Bellagio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio. For train connections in the Varenna area, the Varenna–Esino Lario–Perledo station should be taken into account. These transport connections are located in Varenna and complement the described walking routes to Fiumelatte with additional points of connection for trip planning.

Leonardo da Vinci mentions Fiumelatte under the name “Fiumelaccio” on folio 214 of the Codex Atlanticus. The programme for the 2025 festival included Canestri and Tortelli della Madonna.
