The connection between Barzio and Piani di Bobbio is the clearest link to a skiing holiday. Piani di Bobbio is associated not only with the ski resort but also with a historic use of the landscape: in the early Middle Ages, the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio used the areas of Piani di Bobbio for summer grazing of its livestock. The location therefore represents both today's winter sports perspective and a long history of using the mountain areas.
The Campelli group offers via ferratas for experienced mountaineers that have recently been restored. This points to a distinctly different alpine experience from a classic day of skiing and is therefore mainly of interest to travellers who also want to consider more demanding mountain activities alongside winter sports. It only indicates suitability for certain ability levels in the case of experienced mountaineers.
Museums and history in the town
The “La Fornace” Museum is located in the plain known as Prato-buscante, between Barzio and Pasturo. It is housed in a former brickworks dating from 1890. The exhibits range from local products and agriculture to hiking and the beginnings of skiing, as well as mineralogy, palaeontology and geomorphology. The upper floor presents the fauna and vegetation of lake and subalpine habitats.
The Chiesa di Sant’Alessandro also combines architectural and local history. The single-nave interior is shaped like a Latin cross, with a barrel vault, a dome over the crossing and four side chapels. Archaeological excavations beneath an altar revealed a square apse dating from the early Middle Ages. The church was consecrated on 10 September 1933 by Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster. The portal features bronze doors made by Piero Maggioni in 1985 for the Manzoni anniversary.
The Palazzo Manzoni has been a national monument since 1930. The Medardo Rosso Museum was founded in Barzio in a 17th-century building. Together with the church and the “La Fornace” Museum, this creates a cultural focus that is clearly distinct from the mountain and winter sports themes.
Regional specialities for planning your trip
Barzio's own specialities include Cabiadini. These are traditional biscuits from Barzio, made according to an old recipe. In the rest of the valley, they are known as Caviadini and are sold there. For you, this linguistic and regional distinction can be a small, concrete consideration when choosing accommodation for a skiing holiday, especially if you would like to discover local products as well as spending time in the mountains.
Barzio can therefore be viewed from several perspectives: the Piani di Bobbio ski resort represents the winter focus, the cable car provides the connection between the two locations, while the museums, church, Palazzo Manzoni and Cabiadini add cultural and local character.
