Roman structures and archaeological insights in Aosta
The Arco di Augusto is a triumphal arch dedicated to Emperor Augustus. It stands on the road leading to the monumental Porta Praetoria, the main entrance to the Roman city.
The Teatro Romano is one of the best-preserved structures of Augusta Praetoria. Particularly striking is the surviving southern façade of the theatre: it is 22 metres high.
The MAR – Museo Archeologico Regionale also provides insights into Roman traces. Roman remains of the Porta Principalis Sinistra are preserved in the basement. The museum is designed as a thematic and chronological tour.
Archaeology from six historical phases
The Area Megalitica contains remains from six historical phases dating from 3000 to 1100 BC. This period therefore predates the Roman remains of Augusta Praetoria by a considerable margin. The Area Megalitica thus provides a chronological counterpoint to the Roman structures of Augusta Praetoria.
The museum tour of the Area Megalitica takes visitors along footbridges to the archaeological area. This lies about 6 metres below street level; you can take this into account when planning your tour.
Landscape, mountains and natural arch
The morphology of the Riserva Naturale Tzatelet nature reserve is of glacial origin. Its glacial origins stand alongside the mountains around Aosta.
Pointe de Metz, Becca di Nona and Becca France are located around Aosta. All three are mountains.
Arco D'Augusto, a natural arch, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Aosta. The natural arch Arco D'Augusto differs from the Arco di Augusto, which is dedicated to Emperor Augustus.
Festivals, local handicrafts and regional products
The two events have different focuses. La Foire d’été takes place on the first Saturday in August and showcases local handicrafts. At the Fiera di Sant'Orso, visitors can taste wines and typical products. The date is useful for planning your trip.

Roncas Palace, a palace, is located in the immediate vicinity of Aosta. Criptoportico Forense, a monument, is also nearby. Castello di Fenis, a castle, is located in the area around Aosta. Aosta Cathedral, a church, is also located in the immediate vicinity.
