Gamberale: Nature, Trails and Historic Town Center

Gamberale combines a distinctive high-altitude setting with trails through a natural environment and historic buildings in the town center. The townscape includes the rocky outcrops of Monte Sant'Antonio, Castello di Gamberale and a viewing terrace. Gamberale is also associated with the red deer enclosure and historic buildings such as Casa Pollice and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire.

Altitude and landscape around Gamberale

Gamberale lies at 1,343 m above sea level between the rocky outcrops of Monte Sant'Antonio. The altitude indicates the location of the town, not weather, snow or trail conditions. The red deer enclosure associated with Gamberale is located in Località Laghetto S. Antonio. It lies at an altitude of around 1,500 m in the municipality of Ateleta and near the Gamberale information center. The altitude of the enclosure is given as approximate and is therefore higher than Gamberale's elevation. For hikes between Gamberale and the red deer enclosure, the two elevations can be considered separately.

Hiking trails and red deer enclosure

Trail L4 begins at a junction off the provincial road connecting Gamberale with the red deer enclosure. Hiking trail M1, on the other hand, begins in Località Sant'Antonio at the red deer enclosure. L4 and M1 therefore have different starting points: one trailhead is on the provincial road, while the other is directly at the enclosure.

The red deer enclosure covers more than 10 hectares. Its grounds include forested areas, scrubland, meadows and natural watercourses. The figure of more than 10 hectares refers to the enclosure itself and not to the entire natural area of Gamberale. The various types of terrain are located within the enclosure and complement the connection between the trails and the natural surroundings around Località Laghetto S.

Castello di Gamberale and historic buildings

Castello di Gamberale is located in the highest part of the historic town center. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages. The castle was also built on top of an existing church. Thus, both its location in the historic center and its architectural history are direct features of Castello di Gamberale.

Casa Pollice is located near Castello di Gamberale. The building dates from the 16th century. The parish church Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire, which was built in the early years of the 18th century, is also part of the town's history. Casa Pollice and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire are further historic buildings in the town.

Views and summer feast day

A viewing terrace in Gamberale offers visitors impressive panoramic views. The summer celebrations in Gamberale are held especially in honor of San Lorenzo and take place on August 10. August 10 is therefore the fixed date associated with the summer celebrations for San Lorenzo. The viewing terrace and the feast day of San Lorenzo thus add a specific viewpoint and a fixed date in the town's annual calendar.
