Borrello Among Waterfalls, Nature and Local History

Borrello combines impressive natural landscapes with visible traces of local history. The Cascate del Verde, the distinctive plant life of the nature reserve of the same name, a higher viewpoint and historical landmarks in Borrello are the main attractions.

Natural Area Around the Cascate del Verde

The Cascate del Verde are a natural monument with three cascades, each more than 200 metres high. They lie between steep rock faces covered by habitats rich in vegetation.

The plant life of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde is also remarkably diverse. More than 30 species of wild-growing orchids have been recorded in the garrigue and meadows of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde.

The area of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde is also designated in the Natura 2000 network as a special conservation area named “Abetina di Rosello e cascate del Rio Verde”. In the Riserva, silver fir (Abies alba) and holm oak (Quercus ilex) grow together.

A second, higher and more easily accessible viewpoint also offers a view of the Cascate del Verde. “More easily accessible” should not be equated with full accessibility.

History in Borrello’s Townscape

The Museo della civiltà contadina is located on the ground floor of Borrello’s town hall.

At the edge of the historic centre stands the old Chiesa di Sant’Egidio. It is located above the cliffs of Ripi and over the Sangro Valley. Over the centuries, the church was destroyed and rebuilt several times.

The Chiesa Sant'Egidio features a late Baroque limestone portal decorated with an image of the Madonna. The portal of the Chiesa Sant'Egidio combines late Baroque design with the image of the Madonna, giving the building a clear religious character. Borrello’s history is also evident in the ancient Portasaracina: a small section of it is still visible in the town. Some remains of Borrello’s medieval castle have likewise been preserved and are still visible.
