Guardiagrele: Museums, Crafts and Trails

Guardiagrele combines traditional crafts, church history and trails through the landscape. Several museums take you from finds dating from the 9th century BC to everyday life and craft topics from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century; there are also specific hiking and MTB routes. This allows you to consider culture and physical activity separately when planning your stay and combine them as appropriate.

Culture, Crafts and History

The Museo del Duomo is housed in the three rooms of the medieval crypt, which is attached to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore. It preserves significant pieces from the cathedral and from other churches in the town that survived the 1703 earthquake. The museum also displays fragments of the silver processional cross by Nicola di Guardiagrele; the cross is signed and dated 1431.

The Museo Archeologico “Filippo Ferrari” is located on the ground floor of the municipal building on Piazza San Francesco. Its exhibits include weapons and jewellery made of bronze, iron and glass paste, as well as ceramic vessels of various shapes. The finds date from between the 9th and 3rd centuries BC.

The Museo del Costume e della Tradizione della nostra Gente reconstructs domestic life and craft work in Guardiagrele around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. It includes a fully furnished kitchen as well as a women's area for spinning and weaving with a still-functioning loom. Historical photographs and tools that are no longer in use also document emigration and local crafts.

The Museo Permanente dell’Artigianato Artistico Abruzzese is located in the historic Palazzo dell’Artigianato in Guardiagrele. The exhibition is divided into thematic areas covering jewellery and metalworking, ceramics and terracotta, textiles and embroidery, wood, and wrought iron. The Mostra dell’Artigianato Artistico Abruzzese is held every year in August in Guardiagrele.

Religious and medieval art also form part of the townscape. The Antiquarium Medievale “A. Cadei” houses medieval sculptures, capitals and architectural decorations from the 12th to the 15th century. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore preserves a large fresco of Saint Christopher, created by Andrea Delitio in 1437, beneath its right-hand column portico. In the Chiesa Monumentale di San Francesco · San Nicola Greco, the relics of San Nicola Greco are kept in a glass case; every 25 years, they leave the church for a solemn procession through Guardiagrele.

Hiking Trails, Waterfall and MTB Route

The official F2 circular route is classified as a moderately difficult Category E hiking route. It starts and ends in Bocca di Valle, a hamlet of Guardiagrele, and passes through the deeply cut valley of the Torrente Vesola and beech forest. The starting point of the F2 trail can be reached by TUA buses from Pescara and Chieti, by a connecting service from Guardiagrele to Bocca di Valle, or by the “Napoleone” urban bus service.

For cyclists, MTB route 30 starts in Bocca di Valle, runs via Piana delle Mele and ends in Valle delle Monache. Hiking trail F5 connects trails F1 and F2, allows an upper loop around the Cascate di San Giovanni and begins above the settlement of Valle delle Monache. The Cascata di San Giovanni is one of the highest waterfalls in the Maiella that can be visited.

The trail reaches the clearings of Piana della Civita; there, a viewpoint offers a view of the nearby Adriatic Sea. Alongside forest, valley and waterfall, this provides open landscapes and distant sea views as different experiences to include in your day planning.
