Taranta Peligna between Majella, Caves and Living Tradition

Taranta Peligna lies in the upper valley of the Aventino River and is one of the municipalities within Majella National Park.

Grotte del Cavallone is located on the eastern side of Majella National Park at an altitude of 1,475 metres. The section of Grotte del Cavallone accessible to tourists is approximately 1,360 metres long and ends at the amphitheatre. Those who plan their cave visit as part of their day can use the approximate length of 1,360 metres and the amphitheatre as the endpoint for orientation. The visitor route at Cavallone Easy is divided into four exhibition rooms. Cavallone Easy features genuine crystal formations, stalactites and stalagmites.

Trails and guided excursions

The Madonna della Valle–Loggetta–Sacrario della Brigata Majella trail was recently restored and is of medium difficulty. It connects the Madonna della Valle sanctuary with the Sacrario della Brigata Majella, takes approximately 40 minutes and allows visitors to see the Loggetta along the way. The approximately 40-minute duration makes the connection manageable in terms of time; however, the medium difficulty remains decisive for personal planning.

A cycle path connects Madonna della Valle with Madonna del Carmine and is suitable for experienced cyclists.

The Trekking Point at the Grotte del Cavallone tourist complex offers guided excursions with mountain guides through Majella National Park. The excursions last approximately two hours or one or more days. The guided options range from an approximately two-hour excursion to activities lasting one or more days, thus accommodating different time frames.

Places of remembrance and local tradition

The Sacrario della Brigata Majella is a chapel on a rocky outcrop. It is dedicated to the 55 fallen members of the Brigata Majella partisan formation.

The Church of San Nicola di Bari in Taranta Peligna was completely rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of the town's former castle, which has since disappeared. It stands on a rocky cliff above the Aventino River valley and offers a wide-ranging view.

The Vincenzo Merlino wool mill dates from 1870 and is considered one of the last wool mills in Abruzzo.

The tradition of Saint Blaise includes Panicelle. These are small breads made from flour and water. They are shaped like a blessing hand. People in traditional dress carry them in a procession to be baked.

The Feast of Saint Blaise takes place every year on 3 February. In Taranta, it renews a ceremony dating back to the 16th century. This ceremony is connected with the centuries-old wool tradition.
