Casacanditella: Churches, Wine Tradition and Panoramic Views

Casacanditella combines different areas of the town with religious buildings, wine traditions, local customs and a hilly landscape with far-reaching views. The historic center is home to the Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno, while other churches are located on the edge of the built-up area, outside the center or in the Semivicoli district. The town also includes the Castello di Semivicoli, traditional festivals, regional cuisine and the Parco d'Angelo.

Churches in Different Areas of the Town

The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno is located in the historic center of Casacanditella. The Chiesa della Madonna dell’Assunta is situated differently, outside the built-up center. The two churches therefore represent different spatial settings within Casacanditella.

The Chiesa di San Rocco is located on the southern edge of the built-up area. The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari, on the other hand, is in the Semivicoli district of Casacanditella. The four churches are therefore distributed across the historic center, the southern edge of the settlement, a location outside the built-up center and the Semivicoli district.

Semivicoli and the Preserved Wine Tradition

Several traces of the history of wine and processing have been preserved in the Castello di Semivicoli. These include an olive press dating from 1868. There are also vats for wine production. The olive press and the vats represent the connection between olive oil and wine at the estate.

Wine tastings are offered in the bar of the Castello di Semivicoli estate.

Festivals, Processions and Traditional Customs

The Festa del pescatore is a trout and wine festival. The festival includes folk music and dancing.

Casacanditella’s Farchie tradition has a different character: the contrade erect and align towers made of reeds, created in honor of Saint Anthony the Great.

The procession to the Madonna dell’Assunta is also one of Casacanditella’s traditional customs. During it, girls dressed in white and adorned with flowers and gold jewelry carry grain in filled conche. The detail of the conche and the festive clothing give the procession a distinctive appearance.

Hilly Location and Views as Far as the Maiella

Casacanditella lies on a hill approximately 400 meters high between the valleys of the Foro and Dendalo rivers. The hilly location and the two river valleys shape the town’s landscape.

From Casacanditella, the view extends as far as the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella. The Parco d'Angelo is also known as Parco delle Quercette. The town park lies in a downy oak grove on a hill; the vegetation frames panoramic views there.

Local Cuisine as Part of Your Stay

The cuisine of Casacanditella includes Maccheroni alla chitarra with mixed ragù made from beef, pork or lamb.
