Strohn: Hotels and Accommodation

At the Strohn Volcano House, volcanism is presented in an engaging way: the interactive volcano museum offers small experiments and walk-through experience rooms. One of the special exhibits is a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, measuring six metres long and four metres high.

Culture

The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist has a west tower dating from 1760, a choir from 1867 and a two-aisled hall from 1909. The villagescape also includes a sandstone shaft cross from 1716 and a wayside shrine made of red sandstone from 1791.

At Hauptstraße 45, there is a farm complex with a half-timbered house built using post construction from the early 19th century, as well as an agricultural building from the late 19th century. Many half-timbered houses and the Catholic Church of St John the Baptist characterise the villagescape.

Nature

The Strohn Lava Bomb is a basalt sphere weighing 120 tonnes and measuring just under five metres in diameter. It is a geological record of earlier volcanic activity in the Eifel. It formed when lava repeatedly accumulated on a fragment of a crater rim during successive eruptions. In 1969, the lava bomb was dislodged during blasting work in the lava quarry on the Wartgesberg and transported to its present location by the residents of Strohn. It stands beside a hiking trail that follows the Alfbach stream towards the Strohner Schweiz.

The circular Strohner Schweiz trail follows the deeply incised Alfbach valley, with large boulders and narrow paths. It is considered suitable for walks with children, as it has few changes in elevation and a manageable length. Free parking for the circular trail is available at the church and by the lava bomb.

Hiking

The moderately difficult HeimatSpuren Lavaweg Strohn trail is 20.5 kilometres long, takes around 5.5 hours and includes 293 metres of elevation gain and loss. The route passes the Trautzberger Maar and the Strohner Schweiz.

Cycling

The Vulkaneifel-Challenge road cycling route runs from Strohn via the lava bomb into the Strohner Schweiz. From Strohn, it continues via Mückeln and Oberscheidweiler to the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route in the direction of Eckfeld.
