Nature and Landscape

The network of hiking trails provides access to the Daun Maar nature reserves. Mürmes and Sangweiher are named as wetlands and resting places for migratory birds. The neighboring maar lakes Schalkenmehrener Maar, Weinfelder Maar, and Gemündener Maar are known as the “Eyes of the Eifel.”

The Vulkaneifel is designated as a nature park and UNESCO Global Geopark. Hiking trails, maars, and geotopes make its volcanic history accessible to visitors. Mürmes is a renaturalized, filled-in maar with remarkable biodiversity. The site of the forest school is used for forest youth games and can offer hikers shade beneath beech trees.

Hiking and Cycling

The Vulcano Trail is a circular hiking route that leads from Schalkenmehren through the Mürmes nature reserve and Mehren back to Schalkenmehren. Along this route, there are views of the Mehren Maar. For cycling tours, the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route passes through Mehren; the S1 cycle loop runs past St. Matthias Church. Mehren is also located within the 750 km-long VulkanBike TrailPark.

Culture and Local History

The Mehren cemetery cross is a 3.10 m-high sandstone cross from the Renaissance period, dated 1542. The Renaissance portal of Mehren parish church comes from Himmerod Abbey.

The Mehren tradition of Fat Thursday dates back to 1948. The cultural calendar includes exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, carnival events, and a village festival. The Zimmermanns-Heiligenhäuschen shrine stands on the B 421 at the exit from Mehren toward Daun; the Mehren church choir lovingly restored it.
