West of Ellscheid lies the Mürmes nature reserve, a moor covering approximately 40 hectares in a volcanic depression. It formed around 11,000 years ago and is a distinctive landscape feature of the surrounding area.
The Mürmes provides a habitat for rare plant species as well as many amphibian and insect species. The Mürmes nature reserve and the Mittelweiher are considered attractions in Ellscheid.
Nature
The Mürmes circular trail includes stations focusing on the habitats of the Mittelweiher and Mürmes. There is also a permanently installed telescope for observing the wetland.
A walk around the Mürmes begins at the cemetery car park on Mürmesweg in Ellscheid. This car park also provides access to the Mürmes circular trail, which reaches the Mürmes after approximately 800 metres.
The Vulcano Path Määrchenroute begins and ends at the Janshen poultry farm on Moselweg in Ellscheid. It leads to the Mürmes and the Demerather Drees, a volcanic acidic mineral spring in the Eifel.
The HeimatSpur Antoniusweg has only slight inclines and is considered suitable for families, Nordic walkers and joggers.
Culture
Celtic burial mounds are recorded around Ellscheid; the largest group is located in Starkenbruch. They are clearly visible in the forest and are associated with the Eifel-Hunsrück culture of the Hallstatt period.
A village walk presents local stories and the history of the village at 25 stations.
The original building of St. Antonius Church in Ellscheid was constructed in 1772. The statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy in St. Antonius Church date from the 13th century.
Geographical Setting
The Volcanic Eifel is characterised by maar volcanoes, volcanic cones, lava flows and mineral springs. It also features informative hiking trails, maars and geotopes.
