Hiking and Cycling

Hiking trails from Udler lead to the nearby Holzmaar, Dürre Maar and Hitsche Maar lakes. The Sangweiher nature reserve is approximately two kilometres away on foot.

The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route runs along Udler on a former railway line. The rest of the route between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues is 58.5 kilometres long, has very few inclines, passes through forests and along maar lakes, and goes through the Große Schlitzohr cycling tunnel.

The Manderscheid Castle via ferrata consists of three stages, which can be completed individually or connected by short walking sections.

The Lieser Path comprises four stages and covers 74 kilometres from the source of the Lieser to the Moselle. The trail follows a river through a volcanic landscape and passes maar lakes, castles and mills.

The Eifelsteig is a 313-kilometre premium hiking trail from Aachen-Kornelimünster to Trier. It crosses the Vulkaneifel, where the maar lakes are of volcanic origin.

Nature

The Sangweiher and the nature and bird reserve of the same name lie between Schalkenmehren and Udler. The Sangweiher is considered an old maar and an important habitat for many bird species. Cormorants and the rare red kite find hunting and feeding grounds there. Two observation stations for birdwatching, hidden among trees, are located on its shore.

Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld is considered the deepest maar in the Eifel and is 74 metres deep. In summer, it is a popular place for swimming and boating.

Holzmaar, Hetsche Maar and Dürres Maar lie close together along a tectonic fault line between Gillenfeld and Eckfeld. Holzmaar is the only water-filled maar in this group. Dürres Maar marks the transition from a fen to a raised bog.
