Landscape and Trails in Sinntal

The highest mountain in the Main-Kinzig district, at 585 metres, is in Sinntal. The nearly 14-kilometre Spessartfährte Quellwinkel Kinzig trail offers a glimpse of the landscape. The circular trail runs from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz and passes through two nature reserves. Along the route, open landscapes alternate with wooded slopes; from the ridges around the source of the Kinzig, views stretch towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg.

A shorter circular route is the nearly six-kilometre Spessartspur Jossa-Sinn-Blick trail. It starts at the sports field in Sinntal-Jossa and passes a shelter with a barbecue area on the hilltop above Jossa, a state-recognised health resort.

Along the Spessartfährte trail, numerous orchid species grow right beside the path in the Stephanskuppe and Weiperzberg nature reserves. Their flowering is seasonal and may vary depending on conditions. At the source of the Kinzig near Sinntal-Sterbfritz, tables and benches provide a place to rest, with views over the orchards. The Three Castles Trail also connects here; it runs from Sterbfritz to Schlüchtern and links Schwarzenfels Castle, the ruins of Steckelberg Castle and Brandenstein Castle.

Chess Flower Meadows and Nature Watching

The Sinnwiesen nature reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. Various cycling and hiking trails offer views of the chess flowers; one example is the paved cycling and walking path between Altengronau and Jossa. Flowering is seasonal and weather-dependent. The chess flower festival is held every year in Sinntal-Altengronau at the end of April. Free guided tours visit the chess flower meadows; dates and arrangements may change from year to year.

At Willingsgrundweiher, wooden benches and tables invite you to linger. With patience and luck, you may spot beavers as well as their lodges; beavers are active at dusk and at night. The Schlüchtern Forestry Office offers guided tours on request along the beaver information trail near Sinntal-Breunings. If you would like to combine this walk with a guided tour, take the request requirement into account when planning.

Water and Recreation

The Altengronau natural swimming pool has a water surface of 680 square metres. Its listed facilities include a sandstone diving rock, a water slide hill, a water play area for children, a waterfall, a playground and a table tennis table. For breaks, there are grassy sunbathing areas, wooden decks and relaxation loungers. Check seasonal opening times before your visit.

Historic Sites in Altengronau

The Old Jewish Cemetery is located near Sinntal-Altengronau. This historic cultural monument has more than 1,400 identified gravestones. The first graves were laid out in 1680, and the cemetery has been preserved in its original state. Visits are restricted according to the religious calendar. Check the current visitor regulations in advance.

The Church of the Ascension in Sinntal-Altengronau also preserves relics of a church that is more than 500 years old. These include a sacrament niche made from a single piece of the old church wall, which was incorporated into the new building. The cemetery and church offer different insights into the history of the town: here, a preserved burial ground; there, a visible architectural element from the older church.
