Weichersbach amid Circular Trails, Nature and Village History

Weichersbach combines short local circular trails with a varied landscape and numerous cultural and historical features. Several trails begin in the village centre, while other routes connect Weichersbach with castles, woodland areas and the surrounding countryside.

The Natural Environment around Weichersbach

A defining natural area is the 126.41-hectare FFH site “Dry Grasslands near Weichersbach and Other Areas”. It comprises extensive, extensively managed dry grasslands and fresh meadows on shell limestone sites. Thus, alongside the village itself, an open landscape with a distinctive geological substrate is a focal point.

The circular hiking trail runs along the foot of the Stoppelsberg. Stoppelsberg is designated as a nature reserve and is characterised by dense deciduous forest and the striking Schlangenritz rock formation.

Circular Trails with Different Focal Points

The 6 km Weichersbach circular hiking trail is designed as a nature and history trail. It lies in the northern part of the village and begins in the centre of the village on Schulwaldstraße. The Green Path has a different focus: the 5.3 km agricultural educational trail runs through the western part of Weichersbach and also begins in the village centre.

For a longer loop, the Three Castles Trail is a useful guide. It leads from Schwarzenfels Castle on an approximately 18 km circular route through Weichersbach and the surrounding countryside. Along the way, the Steckelsburg ruins and the Ulrich von Hutten Trail are associated with this route. The different lengths help you distinguish a shorter local loop from a more extensive countryside tour.

Cycling Tours through the Sinntal Valley

There are also several connections for cyclists. The 203 km Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2 runs through Sinntal-Weichersbach between Sinntal-Mottgers and Sinntal-Oberzell. The Sinntal Loop has a different character: after an easy descent, it continues uphill to Weichersbach, Schwarzenfels Castle and the village of the same name.

Mills, Crafts and Village History

The Weichersbach Biemühle is a largely preserved and fully operational historic watermill. The former Keilmühle also offers a glimpse into history. Paper production continued there for more than 400 years and ended after a boiler fire in 1983. This turning point forms part of the village’s history and should not be confused with a present-day production facility.

Another link to the village’s early history is the completely renovated vaulted cellar dating from the 14th century. It is thought to have been the first dwelling and thus the origin of a settlement in Weichersbach. By arrangement, the village blacksmith offers an introduction to the art of blacksmithing. In this way, a hands-on craft experience complements the historic buildings and production sites.

The Natural History Museum’s numerous animal specimens come from the estate of hunter and falconer Rudolf Kutzke, who died in summer 2013.

Church, Festivals and Regional Traditions

Services are held at Weichersbach Church every Sunday and public holiday. They alternate with Mottgers and Schwarzenfels at varying times of 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00 a.m.

The annual village calendar includes the Kirmes, a traditional yearly festival day. The tent Kirmes has been established in Weichersbach since 2010. Another fixed date is the traditional Backfischfest, held once a year at the sports ground in Weichersbach. Both events represent different forms of communal village life.
