Züntersbach: Churches, Circular Trails and Rural Landscape

Züntersbach combines a rural landscape with distinctive evidence of the village’s history and various opportunities for extensive hikes and enjoyable cycling tours. Local History and Religious Heritage

Züntersbach was mentioned around 900 as a settlement in the Saalegau region. In 1167, the village had its own church. Today, its religious heritage includes the Protestant Bergkirche and the Catholic Church of St. Boniface. The Catholic church was built in 1880.

Today’s Catholic Church of St. Boniface is located at the southern exit of Züntersbach. It houses a late Gothic Madonna by an unknown, probably Franconian, master. For those interested in culture, the church building and the Madonna represent two distinct historical points of interest at the southern exit of Züntersbach.

The Protestant church stands on the eastern outskirts of Züntersbach, elevated on a headland. This location distinguishes it from the Catholic church at the southern exit.

Historic Sandstone Details

Another historic building is the historic cemetery wall in Züntersbach. It was built around 1566 from sandstone and is situated on a slope. The natural stone and elevated location make the wall an illustrative example of the village’s historic design.

A tall round-arched portal was built into the cemetery wall in 1609. It is framed by pillars with plinths and features a multiply moulded arch surround. Plinths are the pedestal-like lower ends of the pillars. The moulding of the arch surround consists of several projecting contours on the round arch.
