Wertach

Wertach offers a range of activities in winter: around 15 km of groomed cross-country ski trails, with connecting trails to Nesselwang and Oy-Mittelberg, alongside a dedicated toboggan run at Buron. Hiking trails, local history, and seasonal experiences also shape a stay here.

Cross-country skiing and tobogganing in winter

The cross-country ski trails in Wertach cover around 15 km; connecting trails lead to Nesselwang and Oy-Mittelberg. This makes it possible to distinguish the local trail length from the connections to neighboring towns. Cross-country skiing conditions vary by season, so check the latest status before making plans.

At Buron, specially designed “BERGaufRODEL” sleds are available. Take them up on the valley lift; the toboggan run is about 2 km long and separate from the ski runs. This distinguishes the experience from cross-country skiing: here, the ascent and descent are part of the same tobogganing activity, while for the ski trails, the trail length and connections provide orientation.

Another cross-country skiing option, explicitly located in the broader Oberallgäu destination, is the World Championship trail network at the Nordic Centre Oberstdorf/Allgäu. It comprises more than 30 route variations, including a 6.25 km loop with a steep climb up Burgstall. These details describe the network in Oberstdorf, not the trails in Wertach. Wertach has around 15 km of groomed trails; at the Nordic Centre, the number of route variations is the focus.

Hiking trails and landscape

Wertach has around 120 km of signposted hiking trails. Two-thirds of them pass through landscape and nature conservation areas. Various themed trails invite you to enjoy a leisurely hike from one destination to another. Independently of the routes, around two-thirds of Wertach is also designated as landscape and nature conservation areas.

One specific summer route is the 11 km Sebald Trail. It is accessible in summer and follows in the footsteps of the writer W. G. Sebald, who was born in Wertach, from Oberjoch to Wertach. Six steles displaying excerpts from his work “Vertigo” stand at the original locations depicted in it.

The Wertacher Hörnle is known as a natural monument, with its slopes covered in alpine roses.

Local history and seasonal events

The hammer mill in Wertach is around 400 years old and dates approximately from 1610 to 1620. You can watch the blacksmith at work there. The Obere Mühle has a history of more than 500 years and was first mentioned in official records in 1536. A mill wheel has been turning there again since 2018.

Wertach’s annual Viehscheid cattle drive includes a market, and the event is considered one of the oldest in the region. Another seasonal event is alphorn playing: from Pentecost to the end of September, it takes place weekly on Mondays in dry weather. When planning, the dry-weather condition is particularly important, alongside the stated period and day of the week.

Wine and cheese in Wertach

The Allgäuer Gebirgskellerei in Wertach makes flower wine, berry wine, fruit wine, and specialty-fermented wines. It offers cheese and wine tastings together with s’ Molkefässle for closed groups by appointment. Selected cheese and wine pairings are at the heart of these tastings. A wine hike combines time outdoors with regional delicacies and special flower wines, berry wines, and specialty-fermented wines; offer details may change.

s’ Molkefässle also offers a cheese seminar featuring a variety of cheeses. This is a separate way to learn more about cheese, and is not the same as the cheese and wine tastings for closed groups. The different culinary experiences can thus be distinguished by their focus, without combining them into a single event.

More activities

Guided SEGWAY tours take you through Wertach and the surrounding area. They last around 1.5 hours and offer panoramic views of the Alps and Grüntensee. Tours run on Fridays at 10:00 and 14:00, or by arrangement; the meeting point is arranged individually. Confirm availability and meeting point arrangements before your trip.

For swimming, nearby Grüntensee is an option; conditions and facilities vary by season. So alongside cross-country skiing and tobogganing, there is also a seasonal swimming option, as well as guided tours and trails to suit different interests.
