Ore Mines: Mining, Geology and Tunnels

In the museum village of the Burgberg Ore Mines, the geology exhibition hut presents the history of mining in the Allgäu as well as the geology of the Allgäu Alps and the Grünten. A mineral collection complements the exhibits, including fossilized snails, shells and shark teeth. The visit therefore focuses both on how the landscape was formed and on mining. Admission to the museum village is free. As admission arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the operator’s latest information before your visit.

The discovery tour takes a different approach: accompanied by a mine guide, you travel through nature to and into the historic tunnels of the Theresien and Anna mines. Helmets and lamps are used when entering the tunnels. The tunnel entrances, about 25 metres long, lead into the original mining area. The guided tour thus combines a route through nature with insights into mining history; it is important to factor in that this is a guided tour when planning your visit.

Castle Ruins and Hiking Trails

The Burgberg castle ruins lie above the southern edge of the village. They are among the oldest tower castles in the Allgäu and were carefully secured from 1992 to 1997, with minimal intervention in the building fabric. Alongside the ore mines, they offer another historical point of interest—this time a castle rather than a glimpse into mining.

The Burgberg family hiking trail leads from the nature discovery station at the quarry to the HolzerPfad mountain forest adventure trail. Along the way, it introduces children to historical work in the mountain forest. Another hiking option is stage 08 of the Himmelsstürmer, a route in the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy: it leads from Rettenberg over the Grünten, through a striking gorge and finally to Burgberg. As the Himmelsstürmer route may be revised, check the current route before setting out.

Downhill Riding and Getting to Burgberg

The Freizeit Allride Line is a varied downhill run for mountain bikers. Downhill experience is an advantage on this trail. Check the trail conditions and whether it is operating before riding, so your plans match the current conditions.

More destinations in the wider Oberallgäu travel region

In the wider Oberallgäu travel region, attractions in other towns complement the experiences in Burgberg. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini Klopfer Ski Flying Hill there; the tower lift takes visitors to the observation platform atop the ski-jump tower. Hiking and experiencing nature are thus complemented by a visit focused on ski flying, but in a different part of the Oberallgäu.

Another destination is the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre in Immenstadt-Bühl, right beside Lake Alpsee. Its free-to-enter interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area.
