The origins of Grainet are connected with glassmakers and salt traders. The town developed around 1400 on the cleared site of a former forest glassworks on the Glasbach.

Fürholz is the oldest settlement in the municipality of Grainet. The settlement dates back to around 1220 and was the last stop before the forest on the Goldener Steig salt trade route.
