Falkenstein Castle: History, Theatre and Views

Falkenstein Castle is the town’s best-known landmark. It was built in 1074 by the Bishop of Regensburg. The castle is therefore a historic focal point of a stay that can be combined with experiences in nature at the palace park. From the keep, you can see across the valleys and mountains of the Bavarian Forest.

The Falkenstein Castle Courtyard Plays are also held at the castle: every summer since 1976, they have offered theatre evenings in the inner courtyard. Rock Park and Marked Trails

In the northern part of Falkenstein, Falkenstein Palace Park extends across the surviving castle complex and a wooded granite outcrop. It is described as Bavaria’s second-largest nature and rock park. The rock park is connected by trails and can be explored along different routes. The rock formations in Falkenstein Palace Park include “Frog’s Mouth” and “Hollow Stone”. Together with the wooded granite outcrop, they give the nature and rock park distinctive landscape features. You can plan your visit around the castle complex, the rocky landscape or both, without assuming that every route takes the same amount of time.

Seasonal Activities for Different Interests

Falkenstein Family Outdoor Pool is a seasonal attraction. It has a 50-metre sports pool and a heated leisure pool with a wide wave slide. For children, there is a paddling pool with a mini slide and sun sail, as well as a play area with a climbing frame, sandpit and water hand pump. Cross-Country Skiing When There Is Sufficient Snow

For winter, the Falkenstein market municipality lists a total of 30 km of groomed trails for cross-country skiing. However, the trails can only be groomed if there is enough snow. The distance therefore gives a specific indication of the extent of the trail network, but does not guarantee that the trails will be groomed regardless of conditions. If cross-country skiing is important to your travel plans, take snow conditions into account.
