Arrach was first mentioned in historical documents in 1383. Earlier records for Ottenzell and Haibühl date from 1289 and 1293, respectively. The municipality's history includes the former independent municipalities of Arrach and Haibühl, which were merged by 1978.

The ruins of Neunussberg Castle are located in the area surrounding Arrach. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Chammünster is located in the wider surrounding region.
