When choosing accommodation in Adelshofen, local highlights can help guide you: winegrowing and historic village scenery are complemented by specific hiking and cycling routes. There is something to discover in several districts, including Tauberzell, GroĂźharbach, Gickelhausen and Neustett. Consider whether your trip is more about the history of winegrowing, particular features of the routes or individual buildings. The routes described differ in their course, scenery and accessibility.

Winegrowing and the road through Tauberzell

Winegrowing in Tauberzell has a tradition spanning more than 800 years, and the character of this Franconian Häcker village has been preserved to this day. The road’s route can also be described precisely: the municipality of Adelshofen lies directly on the Romantic Road in the Lovely Tauber Valley, and the road passes through Tauberzell. For orientation, it is worth keeping these two details distinct: one describes the municipality’s location, while the other describes the route through the individual district.

Hiking trails with different features

The Lachenweg climbs uphill along an old sunken lane. Along the way, there are views of former and still-cultivated vineyards; the path also crosses the Rothenburger Landhege, a historic earthwork rampart that is still visible today. The Hasennestle circular hiking trail offers different highlights: it starts at St. Veit Church in Tauberzell, passes through vineyards and affords views of Tauberzell and the valley stretching from Holdermühle to Tauberscheckenbach. Its length is given as approximately 4.8 kilometres. The trail is not accessible to people with mobility impairments because the vineyard’s two levels are connected only by an unpaved path. Before setting out, check the accessibility information and local parking conditions.

The two hikes therefore differ in specific ways: the Lachenweg features a climb, an old sunken lane and a historic earthwork rampart along its route; for the Hasennestle, the distance, vineyards, views and accessibility limitations are key points to bear in mind. Tauberzell’s wild-fruit orchard also features 20 wild-fruit and fruit trees in 16 varieties. Explanatory texts provide information about the plants, adding botanical details to the landscape experience.

Cycling, the valley and village history

Cycling and hiking tours offer different ways to explore the area. Near Tauberscheckenbach, cyclists cross the Tauber and join the well-known Romantic Tauber Valley Cycle Route. A hike from Tauberscheckenbach to Gickelhausen, by contrast, passes through the scenic Gickelhausen Valley. The cycle route and the hike thus combine different ways of getting around with the named places and landscapes associated with each.

In the centre of Adelshofen stands a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. In Großharbach, the Hegereiterweg cycling and hiking trail passes through the village; a historic Landturm dating from 1606 also stands there and forms part of the Rothenburger Landhege. Neustett’s best-known building is a round tower in the centre of the village, formerly used as a wind-powered oil mill.

Gickelhausen, too, preserves distinctive traces of local history: a stone altar table from a former chapel stands in the cemetery, preserved as a monument and held in honour by the residents. The old Brechhaus, a flax-breaking house, is preserved south of the village pond; the municipality restored it in the 1970s. The HautschenmĂĽhle on the Tauber in the municipality of Adelshofen has Baroque half-timbered gables.

A living tradition

The Kirchweihausgraben custom, maintained by the village youth in Adelshofen, is also part of the area’s local character. During a procession through the village, local events are portrayed humorously. This adds a living tradition to the historic buildings and offers another glimpse into village life.
