Literary Trails and Local History

The Literaturweg Franken in Wolframs-Eschenbach is a 2.2 km accessible circular trail around the town fortifications. Its 15 information panels feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day who address Franconia in their works. The trail thus combines a walk along the fortifications with a clearly defined literary theme.

In Neuendettelsau, the Löhe and History Trail focuses on a different period: the 19th century, when Pastor Wilhelm Löhe was active there. Stops are located in Neuendettelsau and at the churches in Reuth and Wernsbach; each has an information panel. Along the trail, you can also visit the Löhe-Zeit Museum and the Mission Eine Welt World Exhibition. The individual stops allow you to explore the town’s history along the way.

Museums and Architectural History

The “wiegen & messen” (Weighing & Measuring) Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits. These include historic scales and their associated weights, as well as measuring rods, folding rulers and vessels for measuring grain. The exhibits bring different kinds of measurement to life: weight, length and grain measures. The German Brush and Paintbrush Museum in Bechhofen a.d. Heide offers a different perspective on craftsmanship. Its permanent exhibition includes household tools as well as specialist brushes and paintbrushes used in crafts and industry. The LIMESEUM in Wittelshofen is the central museum about the Limes World Heritage Site in Ansbach District.

In Feuchtwangen, a museum visit can lead on to the town’s monastic history: the Romanesque cloister is an important testimony to the town’s early monastic history and was built as part of the Salvator Monastery, whose structural core has been documented since the 12th century. Since 1949, the cloister has served as a venue for the Feuchtwangen Cloister Theatre Festival; its Romanesque arcades create an open-air theatre space. Landscape and Trails

The Frankenhöhe Nature Park covers around 1,100 km² and lies within Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim districts, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. It is the source of the Altmühl, the Fränkische Rezat and the Zenn rivers. Its landscape is particularly well suited to recreation. Information about hiking and cycling trails, as well as ranger-led tours, can help you take these options into account when planning an outing.

One specific access point is the Krummweiher, southeast of Königshofen a.d. Heide. From the Dorfstraße stop, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk there; this walking time refers to the route from the stop. The Hesselberg Trail focuses on the mountain’s nature, history and geology, and also leads to some of the Hesselberg’s most beautiful spots. Guided hikes on a range of themes are also offered there. Groups can book customized tours, including specially developed programs for children’s groups, children’s birthday parties, school classes and the holiday program.

Water and Parkland

The Wörnitz River Bath is located directly on the Wörnitz, on the connecting road between Wassertrüdingen and Reichenbach. Swimming takes place in a lagoon-like shallow-water area with filtered water from the Wörnitz. Facilities include a water slide, a children’s mud-play area, a playground and a volleyball court. This makes the river bath a distinct focus for a day trip, separate from the literary trails and museums.

The park at Dennenlohe Castle covers around 26 hectares and offers a more compact area to explore than the approximately 1,100 km² Frankenhöhe Nature Park. The nature park is therefore an expansive landscape, not a single castle park.
