History and Culture

Königstein was granted market rights in 1357; until 1623, the town was governed by the Lords of Breitenstein. Neidstein Castle is located in the area surrounding Königstein. In the wider regional area are Hohenstein Castle and Böheimstein Castle; the historic site of Hohenstein Castle is also located there. Approximately one kilometer north of Königstein lies the oldest human settlement discovered to date in the Upper Palatinate.
