Eislingen/Fils: Cycle routes, the Way of St. James and Late Gothic art
Accommodation in Eislingen/Fils
Eislingen/Fils offers several specific starting points for a trip: cycle routes along the Fils, a section of the RS 14 express cycle route, and the Way of St. James through Krummwälden. There are also literary stops and Late Gothic art at St. James’s Church. When planning your stay, you can decide whether cycling, pilgrimage or the cultural sites should be the main focus. These topics offer different emphases and can be weighted according to your interests.

Cycling along the Fils and towards Süßen
The section in question of the RS 14 express cycle route connects Eislingen/Fils with eastern Süßen. A state announcement dated 1 August 2025 reported that this section had been opened for use. Check the latest route information before setting out. In Eislingen, a shared pedestrian and cycle path also follows the course of the Fils through green surroundings. This gives you two distinct points of reference in the area: the connection towards eastern Süßen and the path along the river.
A section of Filsstraße also has its own history as a shared pedestrian and cycle path: at the beginning of December 2014, the stretch west of the park-and-ride facility at the station was converted and closed to motor vehicles. If you plan to include this section in a tour, check the latest route information. The date records the changes made at the time; current conditions are what matter for planning today.
The Way of St. James, a stamp station and Late Gothic art
The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela has been signposted through Krummwälden since 2008. There is a stamp station for pilgrims in St. James’s Church. This connects finding your way along the pilgrimage route with a specific stop at the church. Those interested in art history will find more to explore there: the altarpiece, individual figures and the frescoes in the choir date from the Late Gothic period.
Another cultural perspective is offered by the Eislingen Poets’ Trail. Contemporary poems from around the world can be found along the route. The pilgrimage route, the church and the literary trail each offer a distinct focus, providing different ways to shape your stay around your personal interests rather than grouping every activity under a single theme.
More routes in the wider destination of Göppingen
The wider destination of Göppingen offers additional cycling and hiking opportunities in the district of Göppingen. The Löwenpfade are circular hiking routes ranging from 3 to 24 kilometres. They can be walked in either direction and are signposted and marked both ways. A board at each starting point provides information about the route, an elevation profile and sights along the way. Distance, route type and information at the starting point therefore offer practical ways to compare different hikes.
For mountain bikes, the district has the Löwentrails: four circular routes ranging from 16 to 30 kilometres. They are particularly suitable for beginners and e-mountain bikers. This is a different offering from the Löwenpfade, which are for walking; when choosing, pay attention to the route type and stated distance. The 186-kilometre “Albtäler” cycle route passes through the district of Göppingen and the neighbouring districts of Heidenheim and Alb-Donau. It is a quality cycle route through the valleys of the Swabian Alb and has been awarded four stars by the German Cyclists’ Association. These regional routes are separate options for planning in the district, not additional routes in Eislingen.
When choosing your destination, you can therefore distinguish between routes by the river, the pilgrimage route in Krummwälden and the cultural stops in Eislingen/Fils. If you also want to include the wider destination of Göppingen, its hiking and mountain-biking routes and the longer cycle route offer further options. This lets you plan your stay around your preferred activity without confusing regional offerings with routes in the town itself.
