Aichelberg lies on the northern edge of the Swabian Alb. Aichelberg rises to 564 metres above sea level. From there, views extend as far as Stuttgart Airport on the Filder Plain and the Stuttgart TV Tower.
Aichelberg and Turmberg are isolated former volcanic vents. They are filled with basalt tuff and shape the local landscape. The volcanic vent at Aichelberg documents the activity of the Swabian Volcano during the Tertiary period approximately 11 to 17 million years ago. An exposure of a volcanic vent at Aichelberg has been designated a geopoint since 2011.
History
The Counts of Aichelberg were first documented around 1210. Around 1350, the properties associated with them passed into the possession of the Counts of Württemberg. Aichelberg is regarded as a municipality that was self-governing for 150 years.
Routes and Surroundings
The bus route connects Aichelberg with Göppingen and Weilheim an der Teck. Aichelberg also has direct access to the A8, providing short road connections towards Stuttgart and Ulm.
The Turmberg circular trail can be reached by taking RE 5 or MEX 16 to Göppingen and then bus route 920 to Aichelberg, Bürgerhaus. The trailhead is approximately five minutes from the stop. The walnut tree educational trail in Aichelberg presents twelve different walnut varieties.
In the wider regional area of the district of Göppingen, educational and nature trails also include fruit-tree educational trails through a cultural landscape shaped by orchards. A village fountain is also listed on the Rathausplatz in Aichelberg.
