In winter, good skiers have a direct chairlift connection from Hauteluce to the Les Saisies ski area. In addition, Hauteluce is connected by a free shuttle to Hauteluce Val Joly and Les Contamines-Montjoie; Les Contamines-Montjoie is 5 km from Hauteluce.

Winter

The Hauteluce valley is a preserved valley open towards the Mont Blanc massif. The winter connection to Les Saisies complements this landscape with direct access to the ski area: the direct chairlift connection is intended for good skiers.

Nature and Trails

The Hauteluce – Barrage de la Girotte hike is a moderate 8.8-kilometre circular route with a walking time of approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. It passes through dense spruce forest and across the Colombe mountain pastures to the Barrage de la Girotte. Another route is the Hauteluce – Col de la Fenêtre hike, a moderate 6.8-kilometre out-and-back route with a walking time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

For mountain bikers, there is a route description for the VTT Cross country – La Bichounette mountain-bike route: it is a 10.5-kilometre circular route starting in Hauteluce. It passes through part of the Hauteluce valley, showcases the traditional architecture of Beaufortain with wooden chalets, mazots and chapels, and follows mountain pastures along wide, accessible paths. The accessible Le tour des chapelles route passes preserved chapel sites in the Hauteluce valley.

The Bureau Montagne Rando Nature, based in Hauteluce, offers guided hikes, snowshoe tours, farm visits, excursions focusing on fauna and flora, trail running, climbing and via ferrata.

Culture and Village Character

The Ecomusée de Hauteluce presents the cultural heritage of the village and its valley. It portrays the lives of Hauteluce’s inhabitants from the 19th century to the 1960s through traditional costumes, agricultural techniques, schooling and former occupations. Free self-guided visits are available for groups and individual visitors.

The Chapelle Ste Agathe is located in the hamlet of Belleville. The 12th-century Romanesque chapel is protected as a historic monument and preserves a remarkable 15th-century mural depicting Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. Its furnishings also include an altarpiece with a painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint Agatha in 251 and Saint Clare in 1253. The Eglise Saint-Jacques-d’Assyrie features an onion-shaped bell tower, an richly decorated façade with trompe-l’œil designs and gilded altarpieces.

In the centre of Hauteluce, the lime tree L’arbre de la liberté has stood for more than 200 years; it was planted during the French Revolution. The Hameau et chapelle de Saint Sauveur offers wide-ranging views over the village of Hauteluce; the associated chapel is visible only from the outside.

In the Hameau des Côtes, there is a mill that cannot be visited, old wooden grain stores and a stream flowing through the hamlet. The Hameau et chapelle du Praz is located shortly before arriving in Hauteluce or when leaving Hauteluce. It comprises old wooden chalets, a small lane and a remarkable chapel, visible only from the outside, set against the backdrop of the Beaufortain massif.

In the Village

The Base de loisirs du Chozal offers a multisport court, children’s play equipment, a freely accessible outdoor fitness course, a boules court, tennis courts and picnic tables. In summer, the market in the centre of Hauteluce brings together local producers and craftspeople; on Mondays, there are also musical performances in the village centre.
