Culture and History
Construction of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation Chapel began in 1900 and took five years. The work included building the chapel, a monumental staircase with 75 steps surrounding the rock, and a crypt dedicated to Saint Joseph. A keep and the first chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph had already been built on the rock in 1428. The monumental bronze statue of the Virgin and Child was donated by the Duchess of Uzès in 1907.
The chapel crypt was converted into a repository for sacred art in the 1980s. The altarpiece and the painting “Institution du Rosaire” date from the 18th century and were listed as movable cultural heritage in 1979. The artwork depicts the apparition of the Virgin to Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena.
The sacred art collection documents popular devotion and is of local artistic and iconographic interest. The bays of the staircase leading to the chapel contain statues of Saint Maurice with a cross and sword, Saint Joseph with a square, a saint with the face of Christ in a medallion, and the praying Virgin Mary.
