History
The Monument aux Ailes Alliées in Échallon symbolizes the Allies’ support for the Maquis of Ain and Haut-Jura in 1943 and 1944. The monument contains the ashes of four officers who belonged to the Buckmaster network.
The Prairie d’Échallon was used in particular on the night of July 13 by eight aircraft for a parachute drop.
In the wider surrounding region of Échallon are the historic site Ancienne Abbaye de Saint-Lupicin, the monastery Ancienne Abbaye de Saint-Claude, and the historic site Abbaye de Bonlieu.
Trails
The interpretation trail “L’étrange trésor de la Vouivre” is accessible year-round and is laid out as a circular route of approximately 3.5 kilometers. It presents the 7,000-year development of vegetation around the lake and peat bogs. The “Tour d’Echallon par Miribel” is a hiking trail.
Local life
Until the 1960s, the milk of the many farmers living in Échallon at the time enabled the production of Comté cheese.
