Culture

At the Église Vieille, the restored choir, the foundations of the nave walls and the bell tower can still be seen. The Église Notre-Dame was built in the Lombard style. The Église Vieille was built in the 5th century on an earlier Gallic place of worship. Its particular value lies in the fact that very few churches from this period have survived in such a visible state of preservation.

The parish church of Saint-Crépin and Saint-Crépinien replaced the former Notre-Dame church, which served the communities of Saint-Crépin and Eygliers when the two communities were united. Its narthex forms the base of the bell tower; among the churches built during the same period, this arrangement is considered unique. The north façade is made of cut and assembled pink marble from the region.

The Chapelle Saint-Michel in Le Villard incorporates an existing chapel mentioned in 1560. The present building was constructed around the former chapel; work began in 1856 and lasted two years. The base of its bell tower is made of cut and assembled pink marble.

The Copropriété du Barry in Saint-Crépin bears the French “Patrimoine du XXe siècle” label, awarded on 15 March 2007 by the Commission régionale du patrimoine et des sites. In summer, the Pays Guillestrin organises guided tours to explore the centre of Saint-Crépin.

Nature

The Sentier des Thurifères is an old mule track connecting the village with the hamlet of Les Guions. It has an elevation gain of 390 m and leads from 910 m to an altitude of 1,280 m. Along the path, visitors can admire remarkable examples of the rare conifer known as the Phoenician juniper.

The peaks of L'Aiguille, Pic de Béal-Traversier, Rocher de la Séa and Pic du Bonhomme are located around Saint-Crépin.

Activities

Gliding lessons are offered at Saint-Crépin airfield; mountain flying can also be practised or further training can be undertaken there. A white-water centre is located at the entrance to Camping de l’Ile.

The Durance, Guil and Clarée rivers in the valley offer various white-water sports, including kayaking, rafting and white-water swimming. Stip-Yaks in Les Pasques, Saint-Crépin, offers discovery, introductory and advanced courses in small groups of no more than five people. The programme includes kayaking, rafting, air boating and hot-dogging on rivers in the Hautes-Alpes and abroad, including Italy and Slovenia.
