Mont-Dauphin is one of the twelve major Vauban sites added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. The fortified complex was built by Vauban from 1693 onwards. It is situated on a barren plateau at an altitude of 1,050 metres, overlooking the confluence of the Guil and Durance rivers.

Culture

The historic garden of Mont-Dauphin features wild and cultivated, local and partly imported food and medicinal plants that have been used since Vauban’s time. It also explains the diet and supply of a mountain fortress from the 18th century to the present day. Guided tours of the historic garden are available exclusively by prior reservation.

The “Little Bighorn, par Ousmane Sow” exhibition comprises 35 sculptures. It is housed beneath the exceptional 19th-century Philibert-Delorme roof structure in the attic of the Rochambeau barracks in Mont-Dauphin. The exhibition offers a self-guided family tour with specially designed stations and shared challenges, and is accessible year-round in Mont-Dauphin.

Atelier Acacia is located in the heart of the Place Forte de Mont-Dauphin. At Caserna Campana, visitors can meet artists and craftspeople.

The Mont-Dauphin site features dry habitats, grassland and human-influenced walls where biodiversity thrives.

Activities

The “Découverte de Mont-Dauphin” route begins at the “Parking des marmottes”, leads into the fortifications and then continues to the marmot discovery trail.

Geographical location

The Parc du Queyras can be reached by coach and train via Eygliers - Mont-Dauphin railway station. From there, the various valleys of the Queyras can be reached by shuttle, car, bicycle or on foot.
