Sallagriffon: Hotels and Accommodation

Sallagriffon is an old village on a hill at the foot of Mont Saint-Martin and Mont Miollans, in the Estéron Valley and on the edge of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département.

Nature

The Sallagriffon–Mont Saint-Martin circular hike is challenging. It takes six hours, is 9.5 kilometres long, and includes 591 metres of ascent and 593 metres of descent. The route starts and ends in Sallagriffon and passes through Sallagriffon, Aiglun and Sigale.

The Alpes-Maritimes département maintains the route to Mont Saint-Martin, including its signposts and trail markings, as part of the PDIPR.

The footpath from Sallagriffon’s entrance car park to the Clue d’Aiglun takes 45 minutes. The route through the Clue d’Aiglun starts at this entrance car park at an altitude of 750 metres.

Because the gorges are extremely narrow, a low water level is essential for the route through the Clue d’Aiglun. In some places, it runs over rock ledges outside the water.

The GR 510 runs from Sallagriffon to Sigale. In the surrounding area, the section between Sigale and Sallagriffon leads to a well-preserved old bridge over the Riolan gorges.

History

The Eglise Sainte-Marguerite is a historic site and monument in Sallagriffon. It was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century and subsequently dedicated to Saint Margaret. Roman remains have also been documented in the Sallagriffon area. The village’s original fortified settlement centre, the castrum, has been mentioned since the 13th century.

In the surrounding area, the Pont du Riolan spans the Riolan, a tributary of the Estéron, and allows travellers heading to Sallagriffon to cross the deep gorges of the same name. As a Sardinian-era relic, it served as the border between France and the Duchy of Savoy until 1860.

Sallagriffon is built of dressed stone and dominated by a fortified house, a restored former castle.
