Nature
The NĂ©ouvielle National Nature Reserve lies at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,091 metres. Glacially shaped granite cirques, moraines and 70 lakes characterise the protected area.
The NĂ©ouvielle National Nature Reserve is home to at least 1,250 species of vascular plants and 180 animal species. These include, among others, the Pyrenean desman, the capercaillie and the isard. Today, the reserve is a destination for significant nature tourism and exploration by hikers.
The peaks of Pic de Bugatet, Pic de Garlitz, Pène Male and Pic des Toudes are located in the vicinity of Aragnouet.
Culture and History
The Chapelle des Templiers church in the vicinity of Aragnouet was built between 1160 and 1170. It was part of a complex that included a now-destroyed hospice, which was run until the 17th century by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and could provide accommodation for travellers crossing the passes. The Chapelle des Templiers is partially protected as a historic monument; this protection was established on 3 January 1939 and 6 February 1952.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Meyabat church is also located in the vicinity of Aragnouet. The Église Saint-Blaise-et-Saint-Martin d'Ancizan church is located in the surrounding area, while the Église Saint-Exupère church is located in the wider region around Aragnouet.
